IACS Network Design

Shield1.png - 1817 Bytes

This topic addresses the design of networks for Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS).

These include networks ranging from simple low speed Modbus links between PLCs to sophisticated high speed self-healing networks capable of monitor and control of large production facilities. IACS networks typically exist "below industrial firewalls" where they connect systems like DCSs (Distributed Control Systems), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Aquistion), Data Historians, and Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESDs). They often also operate in hazardous environments containing electrical, chemical, explosive or nuclear risks.

This topic also includes industry-specific networks, such as long-distance SCADA or specialized manufacturing networks containing advanced robotics.

The following describes a practical PERA approach for design of high integrity networks for use in hazardous areas.
