PERA Enterprise Classification System

PERA addresses all Enterprises and Industries.

However, the reality is that each industry has unique aspects such as:

• Industrial Standards
• Professional Roles
• Risks
• Terminology, and
• Products

PERA provides an Industry Classification System that uses 4 digits to define any industry

• The first digit is the Industry Class (e.g., 1 = Process Industry, and 2 = Manufacturing Industry)
• The second two digits define the industry Sub-class (e.g., o6 = Petroleum and Natural Gas, and)
• The last digit defines an industry within the Sub-class (e.g., 3 = Oil Refining.

This Classification System allows PERA tables that efficiently share common Industry Class, Sub-class, and Industry information.
Later you will see how this is used in Master Planning and Design Phases.

Some ACS standards are specific to an industry. Others, however, like IEC/ISA 62443 do not distinguish between Industries.
The PERA Master Planning Process addresses industry differences using information tables described above as part of the As-Is and To-Be standards selection and reconcilation process.

Another benefit of Industry Classes is in the definition of Industry-specific terminology and products. It is more difficult for practitioners to accept concepts that are framed in terminology and products from other industries.
