The PERA structure makes it possible to identify products or services for use in specific applications in specific industries:

  1. Industry (e.g. Refining or Oil Fields)
  2. Enterprise Phase (e.g. Engineering or Operations)
  3. Human Role (Responsible Profession)
  4. Architecture Level (for Control and Information Systems e.g. PLC or HMI)
  5. Plant Area/Unit (for Facilities e.g. Tank Farm or Pump House)

Note that "Principal Role" e.g. Owner/Operator or Vendor is not included in this hierarchy. This is because the same product may be used by one Principal Role, Sold by another, and serviced by a third.

Products may be organized by Physical Architectural Level or the Area/Unit where it is typically installed.
